Healing Touch refers to the application of light touch on the body or above it to bring about changes to the body’s energy field. In essence it is a type of energy medicine.
The practitioner will place his or her hands on the client’s body or just above the body to assess the energy field and the type of treatment to use. Unlike Therapeutic Touch which is more of a specific treatment technique, Healing Touch is a program which includes a number of techniques and treatments such as the chakra system. The practitioner helps to reorganize the pattern of energy flow to allow for rebalancing and healing.
A session is about 45 minutes to 1 hour and usually begins with a detailed consultation about the client’s health background and specific concerns he or she is presenting. Healing Touch works out of a mutual relationship between a compassionate and intuitive healer and a client who is very much an integral part of the healing process. In the founder’s own words “Healing touch is the art of caring that comes from the heart of the healer and reaches to the person who is receiving help”1
Janet Mentgen, an American nurse who practiced for over 40 years, developed Healing Touch in the 1989. She studied many forms of energy medicine and worked with other healing practitioners. Healing Touch is the culmination of this work. In 1993 a certificate program in Healing Touch became available through the American Holistic Nurses Association. By 1996 Healing Touch International Inc. was initiated to administer certification courses more widely.
