There are many types of physical rehabilitation programs, including orthopedic, neurological, pediatric, geriatric and cardiopulmonary. Regardless of the type of rehabilitation, the goal is the same - to restore independence, functional mobility, and quality of life after illness, injury or surgery.
Rehabilitation specialists include physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, prosthetists and orthotists.
Consulting with the individual‘s healthcare team, the orthotist or prosthetist will suggest the appropriate device based on the individual needs of the patient after performing an examination including manual muscle testing, gait analysis, and evaluation of sensory function, joint stability, range of motion and skin integrity.
When orthotics or prosthetics are prescribed, orthotic and prosthetic professionals will create a treatment plan to suit the needs and goals of the patient.
